3-Year B A Degree Programme in Mass Communication
Welcome to our Department of Mass Communication, where we expose you to the tools you need to navigate the communication challenges of the 21st century and communicate with purpose and passion. Success in today’s rapidly evolving media industries requires a solid foundation in the liberal arts and a comprehensive training in communication theory and production as traditional communicational channels overlap and converge.
The Mass Communication programme at MBS is dedicated to providing a broad foundation in communication. Mass Communication majors build a universal platform for study through courses in communication theory, media history, media law, and media ethics. All majors study the theory and skills of both journalism and electronic media production before selecting electives to create a course of study in journalism, video production, film studies, advertising, public relations, communication research, or a combination of these traditional fields to meet individual interests and cross-media expertise.
Whether your goal is to become a mass communication practitioner, a media critic, or to pursue graduate study, MBS Department of Mass Communication is the ideal place to begin your journey. The department has established itself as a leader in the mid-Atlantic region by providing programs that help students achieve outstanding visual, verbal and written communication skills.
This major will help you discover the practical application, structure, processes, aesthetics, responsibilities and effects of the mass media. Develop and refine your visual and written skills and learn to think critically about ways in which the mass media influence society. You will learn how the various fields in mass communication are structured and function, and broaden their understanding of how the media are converging and the consequences of that convergence; of relevant theories of mass communication and research in the field; and legal issues, statutes and regulations affecting mass communication. This major prepares you for career options, especially in the broadly defined fields of print and broadcast journalism, new media, advertising, strategic public relations and integrated communications.
